April 22, 2018, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Carroll's guest the first hour is Rod Tam, a former state senator and city councilmember. They talk about the "monster" homes being built around Hawaii, often without permits. Neighbors and others are wondering why rules are not being enforced by the Department of Planning and Permitting. Carroll and Rod discuss the many problems people are experiencing when a monster home is built in their neighborhood, including property lines, runoff, and parking. Rod and Carroll also talk about a rail audit and what that means. Finally, Rod suggests everyone should have a "No Trespassing" sign on their property. Otherwise, you will be liable if anyone enters your property for any reason and gets hurt. There are also issues of "homesteading", and even postmen entering your property. Check it out.

The second hour Carroll's guest is Elizabeth Mitchell, President of the Association of Professional Observers. Fishery observers ride along on fishing boats, taking notes on any violations of marine laws, bycatch, and the biological status of various species for fisheries management. Elizabeth tells us over the past few years a number of fishery observers have disappeared. A recent disappearance in Ecuador is still under investigation. Another observer from Papua, New Guinea was the fourth observer from that country to disappear. Several other observers have disappeared and Liz tells us there seems to be a lockdown on information.
Liz talks about one person who died in 2015, aboard a USA vessel, from an infection caused by a knee injury. This particular observer was previously on a USA vessel where he reported illegal shark finning. After he was assigned to the same vessel a second time, he refused the assignment. He was then assigned to another vessel, and that is where he died. Details regarding medical attention are not available. There are many different stories about specifics regarding the disappearance of observers, and the lack of thorough investigations. No one knows the truth.
Observers are an important part of the international fishing industry to support sustainable fisheries. The disappearance of so many observers is very troubling, to say the least. Furthermore, Liz tells us they can no longer trust the data being reported, nothing is being done with anything that is reported, and there is no protection or support for the observers.

In 2015 Carroll talked with Elizabeth Mitchell about problems the observers were experiencing. It is a lot worse now. Link here to our 5/10/15 show.
Shark Finning is illegal. These pictures were taken almost 20 years ago, but, even though illegal, it looks like finning is still going on. Link here for more information and pictures about shark finning.
