                                   Pan Handling on Mauna Kea.

While giving assurances the placement and operation of the high-tech telescopes on Mauna Kea, using the best science and practices to protect the fragile and unique ecosystem of Mauna Kea,  we believe they are not practicing what they preach.  Records obtained under Hawaii’s Uniform InformationPractices Act paint a different picture.  Some of those records show numerous spills of Hydraulic fluids and oil, approximately 380  pounds of the hazardous chemical fire retardant Heptafluropropane, and improperly and unlawfully storing and transporting hazardous waste.

These pictures shows one of their high-tech methods for protecting the fragile and unique ecosystem of Mauna Kea.

Note, the W.H. Keck observatory(MMKO) is using aluminum serving pans “to capture hydraulic floods leaking from the Hydrostatic Bearing System (HBS) at the approximate rate of 0.25 gallons per month.  Some portion of that seeped hydraulic oil has been released into the ground below the facility.  The duration of the release is yet unknown.”    Link here to the June 24, 2018, document regarding the release of hydraulic oil.
