Carroll brings us up to date with current developments regarding the 2014 fule tank leaks at Keehi Lagoon. The state and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) were slow in inspecting the condition of the tanks, and seem to be in cover up mode now, but the federal government's Pipeline and Hazardous Safety Administration has taken action. See the attached Notice of Proposed Safety Order from the U.S.. Department of Transportation. The notice outlines all the problems found at the storage tank facility. There are so many issues, why haven't we heard from the EPA and State of Hawaii Department of Health yet? Also see Carroll's article, dated September, 2014, about the situation: State investigates cover-up of Keehi Lagoon oil spill.
Carroll also talks about the huge fire at Island Recycling Inc., at Campbell Industrial Park. The fire started during the early morning hours of 7/4/15, and may take several days to put out. The fire is burning in a mountain of junk with billowing clouds of black smoke. Some of the smoke, from burning oil, gasoline, and chemicals reached as far as the Nanakuli
area. We were there all a day, but did not see the EPA or State Heaoth Department on scene to monitor for air quality, runoff, or other environmental concerns this fire presented. This was not the first fire at Island Recycling, Inc. On 5/1/04 there was a fire at Island Recycling's Sand Island Facility. Link here to that story. On 12/23/03 Carroll wrote a letter to the Department of Planning and Permitting regarding conditions at Island Recycling, Inc. Link here to letter.
