January 28, 2018, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Carroll's guest is Mike Goodman, Director of the Hawaii Kai Advisory Council Homeless Task Force, dedicated to ending homelessness. They are looking at alternate materials for creating dwellings at 1% the cost of creating traditional dwellings, with the goal of giving everyone a place to go. In conjunction, they are supporting HB 2014 and SB 2628, with proposals to designate parcels of land for alternate housing that will provide each family a "place to go", and include community services.
Goodman tells us, using alternate materials on designated land, 8,000 units could be built to provide everyone with a roof over their heads. He also talks about each community developing its own self government. The success of the homeless community at Waianae Harbor shows how self-governing could work. Goodman then talks about why shelters are a problem.
Callers discuss the issues.
The House and Senate bills have not been heard yet, so please call your legislators in support. For more information about the bills, or about the task force, call 808-428-9779 or visit website www.hawaiikaihomelesstaskforce.org
