        September 11, 2016, Honolulu, Hawaii.

Carroll  and Kathleen "KC"  Connors discuss the City of Honolulu's "TheBus" system.   Service for Windward and North Shore  is bad.   Buses come once an hour and are often late.   People cannot get to their jobs on time and kids end up hitchhiking to school.   A while back, before the rail project started, buses came every 30 minutes.  Then services were cut to save money.   People are complaining about long waits, poor connections and transfers, no shelters and benches, and unsafe waiting areas, but nothing is being done.    Even tourists are impacted, and small  local businesses are losing customers.  Remember the Circle Island route?   Tourists were frequent riders.     Not only do cuts in service severely impact students, the elderly, the disabled, and  working people without cars, they affect everyone.    Part of the problem of late buses is the traffic, and this may be due to many of the residents giving up on the bus.   Maybe if there were more buses on the route, there would be less traffic, and everyone would win.

The point is, if we want to grow our economy and our jobs, we need a good, reliable bus service.  The rail will not do it.   Inadequate and unreliable bus service has isolated the windward side and other areas, and it needs to be fixed.

The whole island needs good, reliable public transportation.  Help support restoration of bus service by emailing Roger Morton at TheBusStop@honolulu.gov  and City Council Chair Ernie Martin  emartin@honolulu.gov.      Also contact Kaneohe-Kailua City Councilman Ikaika Anderson to comment on the situation.

Many callers have comments.  One caller notes there will be a meeting on 10/5/16, at the Waikiki Community Center, to talk about HandiVan service, a subject that has come up many times on our shows.

The Associated Press just published a story, reposted in the Star Advertiser on 9/8/16, regarding illegal aliens on Hawaii fishing boats.   However, this is a story we researched back in 2000.

We first reported our story, "Aliens & Fishermen - Sweatin' it out",  in the September, 2000, edition of Hawaii Fishing News.  We also posted it on our website, envirowatch.org.     Link here to our story.

The INS looked into the issues, and In 2002 the Honolulu StarBulletin wrote a story, "Foreign Fishermen Barred from Isles".    Link here to their story.
