IS YOUR POKE FRESH? THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY FISH |
|||
Imported fish comes from boats and other sources that have little or no regulations to protect turtles, seabirds, marine mammals and sharks. Local fish is caught under envrionmentally responsible regulations and is a sustainable fishery monitored by the National Marine Fisheries Service and cited as the role model for fisheries worldwide by the UN Food & Agricultural Organization. Imported fish frequently has been treated with a deadly gas (carbon monoxide) to mask the inferior quality and appearance of the fish. Very little imported fish is inspected and most of the inspected shipments are rejected by the FDA because they contain histamines or bacteria, such as salmonella, or the fish is just plain filthy. All locally caught fish is inspected and passes stringent FDA health regulations. Next time, before you buy fish, consider buying only fish produced in Hawaii to support your environment and to protect the health of you and your family.
