Carroll and guests Colonel Al Frenzel, USA (Ret.) and Jack Defeo, continue their discussion regarding military downsizing in Hawaii. They also discuss Governor Ige's
nomination of Carlton Ching as Chairman of the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources. Ching is a registered lobbyist (as of 1/12/15) for Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii, Inc. This does not bode well for Hawaii.
This time around, downsizing, and any turnover of military facilities and bases, must be carefully planned and managed. Downsizing should be decided by the actual needs of the military experts, not by Hawaii State politicians seeking pork. While the Navy, Air Force and Marines make a lot of sense for Hawaii, a combat unit consisting of ground troops does not, particular with the lack of live fire training facilities on Oahu and the time it takes to deploy troops from Hawaii.
A caller notes the successful closing of California's Fort Ord, and The Presidio in San Francisco. The Presidio was turned over to public use and is now one of the highlights of the city. This can be done in Hawaii. How long have we wanted to use the Kolekole Pass? Maybe now it will be a possiblity.
Army downsizing is a win-win for a majority of the residents of Hawaii. Those who oppose it are the politicians pushing their own agendas. Just read today's StarAdvertiser to get the picture.
Now is the time to learn the facts and get involved in a meaningful way. For more information on downsizing, and the upcoming military listening sessions, link to website www.oc4ad.com. Also, link here to the military's QDR2014 Quadrennial Defense Review.
This is something we should all be involved in. The next listening session is 1/27/15, 6:30 p.m., at the Hale Koa Hotel.
