Carroll starts the show with speeches and music to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Larry Rushing, this year's Grand Marshall for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Parade joins Carroll to talk about continuing racism in America and concerns about "black on black" crime. According to Mr. Rushing, hiring more black police officers would be a big step in the right direction. Unlike the protests of the 60's, today's protests include many whites alongside the blacks, which is a positive sign. Rushing says, you get what you fight for, even a black president. Callers also discuss issues and recommend seeing the movie "Selma".
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Parade is on Monday, January 19. It starts at 9 a.m. at Magic Island, travels down Kalakaua Avenue, and ends at Kapiolani Park with a unity rally, food and entertainment. This year there will be a big yellow garbage truck in the parade representing the garbage strike in Memphis where King was killed. Also a city bus will be included representing the 50th anniversary of the bus boycott. For more information on these and other events, visit www.mlk-hawaii.com.
