DARING RESCUE IN ACTION

Honolulu Fire Department, Police, Lifeguards and Emergency Medical Services responded to a call to rescue a distressed swimmer  at the Lanai Point Vista lookout located at the base of Koko Head Crater.   Witnesses reported that the swimmer's friend alerted bystanders that the swimmer  had jumped in the water,  was struggling, and was having trouble with the strong surge.   Lifeguards entered the water and rescued the swimmer.   After assisting the swimmer back to shore Paramedics and Firemen evaluated the swimmer's condition.   The swimmer refused to be transported to the hospital and was released at the scene.

The Lanai Lookout attracts thousands of tourist and locals every year,  A great many of them ignore the posted signs advising "no entry".  They hike to the water's edge and subject themselves to dangerous waves and heavy surge.   This area is also known for its jagged rocks and strong currents.  These pictures show the swimmer's many abrasions and cuts from having been thrown against the rocks.

A number of bystanders were puzzled by the fact that the swimmer was a local resident and should have known better to enter the water under these conditions.
