Subject: NHHCA Flyer to our community on the Nanakuli Village Center
To:
Aloha Kakou,
Yesterday, last night and this morning, I have received numerous phone
calls and visits to our house from many supporters who are insisting we
get out a flyer to counter all the lies. Our Boards silence is not
helping us, SO, Kali, Mike and I created a flyer that I am asking all of
our Board members and your families to help distribute, this weekend.
Its on our stationary from the NHHCA Board. We need to counter all the
lies that are being spread about our NHHCA Board and Hale Makana and
tell our people straight facts.
Kimo and Hana could you both help to coordinate this, Mike is printing
the flyers and Kimo if you call him, he'll get it to you. I think that
as long as we cover the main body of Nanakuli (first road to mauka and
Mokiawe) the coconut wireless will do the rest but we need to do this.
Read below, I've approved the language of the flyer - its printing as you receive this.
Mahalo,
Kamaki
" In response to the false rumors and misinformation being spread
throughout the community and the "flyer" that was also distributed that
contained total falsehoods and blatant lies about the "Nanakuli Village
Center" Development, we provide the following true information and
facts:
The Nanakuli Village Center is something that was created out of many
years of input, surveys and discussions within the Nanakuli Hawaiian
homestead community. No one was "blind-sided". It is a community driven
project to create jobs, business opportunities, educational facilities,
a community center
and rental housing for our Hawaiian people, not Micronesians and non
Hawaiians. The focus has been and will always be our Hawaiian people.
These are trust lands dedicated for the benefit of our people. We are
following and living the Hawaiian Home Commission Act which was written
to provide and facilitate our self determination and self governance. To
do otherwise, as these people are suggesting, would be against the law,
which is not what we are doing. Such assertions are ridiculous. We are
Hawaiians that are dedicated to trying to make our community a better
place to live, work, or obtain an education. By developing these new
facilities, this becomes not a possibility or dream, but a reality.
The Hale Makana O Nanakuli is a 48 unit rental housing project that
grew out of our people's need for housing. The homeless situation, the
need for kupuna housing where other family members could also live with
them, Hawaiians needing housing but unable to afford the typical large
mortgages associated with single residential development on DHHL lands,
and the over 23,000 Hawaiians on the waiting lists, all point to the
need for rental housing. When the project is restricted to tenants with
low-incomes, it allows access to free money generated by using
low-income housing tax credits and bonds. These same type of tax credits
were used in the Waimanalo kupuna housing project and the Hoolimalima
rent to own project in Kapolei - both on Hawaiian Home Lands and
restricted to Hawaiians. Without these funds, the projects could not
have been built. Like the Hale Makana project, and like the Hawaiian
Homes Commission Act, these projects and the law were created to help
the more economically challenged Hawaiians in our communities."

Aloha kakou,
When I, mama and the Hew Lens came home from judging a three day hula
festival last night, my neighbors the Mayers (our supporters) came
across the street to tell me that because nobody has heard from our
Board they now think we too high makamaka to even call a meeting (which
they said we promised)to answer questions. They are now going to call
their own meeting (up the high school), not invite us, and vote to
remove us from office (their meeting with Jobie failed).
Georgette Mayers and Mike printed 2,000 flyers this weekend and nobody
called to help distribute. We knew this was going to happen yet we sit
around and debate the issue. Too Late. Mama, I and Mike will begin
distributing this week. Mama and I, this morning. Will the rest come and
pick up these damned flyers and help us.
