For many years federal, state and city officials have mismanaged Lake Wilson, covering up defects in the dam's structure and its potential for failure if water levels are not managed properly. In fact, the dam has had problems with valves on an ongoing basis for many years. The recent news stories about water flowing from Lake Wilson claim the lake gets its water from the natural watershed. However, this is not entirely true. The lake also gets a large portion of its water (at least 2 million gallons per day) from the City and County of Honolulu's waste water treatment plant (see photo of pipe discharging "treated" water). In light of the current low levels of water, and therefore more concentrated pollutants in the lake, we note that the government is not addressing the risk that the water poses to fishermen, boaters and other users who come in contact with contaminants in the water and mud. They claim that some of the water may spill into the Kaukonahua stream while they know that they are intentionally dumping it into the stream because the flume cannot take it away fast enough. Link here for a risk assessment of chemicals in Lake Wilson - Yellow background indicates points above reporting limit. Our earlier research of records found that the dam is not structurally sound and there is a great threat that it might collapse if the lake is filled to capacity. Supposedly, safety measures are in place to protect communities like Otake Flats, which is located downstream and had fatalities from an earlier dam overflow.
