STEVE PETERSON

Steve Peterson, Ph.D., is anentomologist for AgPollen, a pollination service company.  He has 22 years of experience working with solitary bees for crop pollination.  Steve has managed alfalfa leafcutting bees for alfalfa and vegetable seed pollination, and blue orchard bees for almond and cherry pollination.  He also has experience in managing honey bees and raising queen bees.  In a cooperative project with USDA-ARS, Steve helped develop a chemical nest attractant for the blue orchard bee with funding from the Small Business Innovation Research grant program.  He is currently part of the Integrated Crop Pollination Project.  This is a coordinated agricultural project, funded by USDA that is exploring the value of native and managed bees and the benefits of supplemental wildflower plantings (for more information, go to www.icpbees.org).  Steve lives in Visalia, California with his wife and son.

JOE FAHEY

Joe Fahey is the ownerof Peck & Bushel Fruit Company, located near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The orchard was established in 2010 and contains nearly 7,000 dwarf apple and cherry trees.

Joe grows all of his fruit organically. He does not use any synthetically manufactured chemicals, fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides or genetically modifed products. He does plant flowers and shrubs that attract native pollinators to enhance the natural fruit tree. The unprecedented spring temperatures of 2012 provided incentive for Joe to explore a possible solution to poor cold weather pollination. With help from Dave Hunter at Crown Bees, he will be experimenting with the hornfaced mason bee in his orchard this spring.
