HAZMAT Responds to call from BEI  - Video & Pictures

At approximately 1:30 pm, May 22, 2009, the Honolulu Fire Department, Police and a State Environmental Specialist responded to a report of a bulging tank containing chlorine gas at  Brewer Environmental Industry Hawaii (BEI),  91-0150 Kaomi Loop, Kapolei.  A small amount of chlorine gas  escaped from the tank.   As a precaution all non-essential personnel in surrounding businesses in Campbell Industrial Park were evacuated without incident, and access to the industrial park was limited to emergency workers only.   An all-clear signal was issued shortly after 6:00 pm.

Employees first noticed the bulge in the chlorine tank and called the Fire Department.  The contents of the tank were evacuated and incorporated into the normal process of making bleach at the plant.  James Mistyshyn, BEI Vice President of Distribution, advised that there was never any eminent danger,  but the company and Fire Department officials erred on the side of caution.
